when you stare at the abyss, the abyss stares back at you

There’s something about running…

…that familar ache as muscles stretch…

…as the brain takes over and regulates breathing…

…in time for the rush of adrenaline as the distance beckons…

…and the focus shifts to feet pounding pavement…

…while constantly wishing for more breeze…

…besides keeping an eye on ground in case of that odd branch or rock…

…finally settling into a rhythm of one breath two steps one more breath two more steps…

…barely noticing time slip away into a blur (unless one has a watch – not recommended)

…until the heart beats much faster and breathing becomes more of a gulp for air…

…but oh that fantastic rush of joy where perhaps everything in life could be handled…

…mind starts to tell the body to hang on until the breathing quickens…

…heart pounds…

…body resists the urge to stop and deigns to sprint…

…just in time to cross the psychological finish line.
