they removed the carp/koi at Capital Towers pond
*sad* I recall when I used to work near Capital Towers and would take the train to and from Tanjong Pagar MRT. Used to enjoy watching and taking pictures of the carp/koi when I had time/chance. Had a client meeting there earlier today, and while waiting at the cab queue, saw that the pond was dry!
ahh..nostalgia.
Last week – in pictures and words
Man! It was tough even finding time last week to think through an entry much less post one. =( But lots happened on the work front and I managed to sneak in and capture photos where I could.
Had a fantastic dinner at Hachi with Debbie and Adrian on 15 June - not something to do every week but I wouldn’t mind 8 course meals every month or so…*yum*
Nokia Connection happened the week of 18 June. Have some shots taken; not sure about the pre-event ones though, on whether I can post them. What’s the deal anyway – anyone know? Can you post up shots taken of pre-events by vendors without permission?
Here’s what I have…all pictures taken with a Nokia N95.
Attended iX 2007: Academic Forum organised by the TDM group. It was a rather cosy affair, held at the SMU Admin Building. That place looks and feels like a maze but the auditorium is pretty cool – with plugs and LAN points in their seats. I wish I was a student again! NUS – are you paying attention?
Anyway, they had a good set of speakers ranging from Podtech.Net, Adobe, Lynda Brown etc. who raised some rather good points although perhaps coming from a tech background, I felt like I’ve heard them said and repeated dozens if not more times!! However, to many in the audience, I bet that it was a “ear-opener”, if not at least someone confirming what they might already have known.
Importantly though, such industry/academic exercises are valid and critical to establishing the nature of the community sharing platform/trend. Asia and by virtue, Singapore, is in a really solid position to be on par with the US in terms of being Web 2.0-ready (for want of a better term). By the end of this decade, there will be more bloggers/community-sharing type people in this part of the world than in the US. China, although not often included as part of Asia-Pacific, will weigh in with their trends and cultural habits on the Internet. How will people share then? How do people share now? These consumption habits and thought patterns will be different as cultural shifts take place.
What TDM is doing is an essential part of any developing sub-culture that will move into mainstream. And I am willing to bet, in a shorter amount of time as initially projected by anyone following the Web 2.0 trend. Congrats TDM team!
Got into the main iX 2007 seminar on Thursday – tks to one of our own senior mgmt figures speaking. The only thing I walked away with that morning was that the Google CIO/VP for Engineering is a great speaker. The fact that I could almost hear him mentally counting “1 face audience, 2 turn around click slide, 3 mention point X, 4 spin sround, look smart’ only tarnished the shine a tiny little bit. Overall, it was OK.
And that nearly ended my week of technology and Web 2.0. Friday was in the office and hibernated over the weekend with 3 new games – FOD (go google it if you aren’t sure what it is), AOE 3 Expansion and ShadowRun (Xbox 360 – now I got to go Xbox Live damnit). btw, I think that Xbox 360 games should have better game descriptions on them about whether it is a single player with storyline or a stupid LIVE game that you need to pay money for. I like playing solo. Shouldn’t have wasted $70 at Challenger on ShadowRun.
MusicStation – at what cost?
apparently, there’s going to be a new music download service coming to Asia before iPhone and iTunes. Called MusicStation, both the Financial Times and our own Straits Times have picked up on the initial news.
first thoughts, woah!not bad, at least there’s going to be less trips out to town/Tampines to scour the Sembawangs, and the HMVs just for that one song on that one album that once ripped…will collect dust from then on. unless there’s a HDD party or a CD exchange going on…
but on second thought, how much will they charge for the service? iTunes in the US charges USD$0.99/1.99 per download. i am not sure if local operators/stakeholders will keep to that price. but to be completely honest, anything more than SGD$2 a song, and there’s no difference from buying the CD for $18 since you get lyrics, content and bonus MTVs…sometimes. And the most important thing here, would be these downloads must be portable. it any DRMs are imposed on it, it better not limit transfer to 3 moves or less.
if it is completely portable, and at a reasonable price/download, that this might actually really work!
Stress busters…
as recommended by the American Lung Association.
All common sense but some of the gems include:
“Relax your standards. The world will not end if the grass doesn’t get mowed this weekend.”
“Delegate responsibility to capable people.”
“Forgive people and events. Accept that we live in an imperfect world.”
“Have an optimistic view of the world. Most people do the best they can.”
Check out the full list here.
algorithm march…check out the ninja!
Just when you begin to think it’s safe to come outdoors again…this takes place.
Cisco telepresence rocks!
I had the opportunity, tks to a client of mine, to sit through a Telepresence demo.
One word: WOW!
I was really impressed with the simplicity and ease of use. There was no lag, no perceptible difference in audio or visual. Importantly, once the group got over the novelty of the technology, it got very easy to actually relate to the people on the other side as almost “being in the same room”. Body language, eye contact and other non-verbal gestures followed the same visual cues of someone physically in the same room.
It was really an eye-opener as well since all audio, visual and data seams were really smooth. There was a mini-demonstration and the person used powerpoint to hit home some points. It felt very immersive and almost, if you pause to think, really surreal.
Of course, there are limitations to the execution of such a tool but given optimal scenarios, it is really very workable and something that might become more mainstream eventually. *fingers crossed*
Found a couple of videos on Youtube that showcased this tech.
hsewarming with the LT10 group
Had my hsewarming with the LT10 group yesterday.
In case I forget to say it, you guys rock! *grin* Only bunch of people I can still rely on to turn up 1 hour late, polish off enough food to feed twice the group size, play MJ and still sit through 5 freakin’ movies (starwars episodes 5, 6, 1 and 2 + the dragon whatever one) to leave at 6am in the morning.
Man, I miss those days in uni. *emo*
And here’s the photos, LT 10 guys, you can grab them from Flickr also. Already uploaded (in case Sam wants to scold/nag/lecture me).
Thanks Sam for the carrot jelly!
The MJ game in progress…
The 6am Starwars faces. This one was particularly funny…

Affluenza
Oliver James has written a new book, Affluenza, in which he describes affluenza as an obsessive, envious state that “increases our vulnerability to emotional disorders”.
He obviously didn’t include in the definition that the people most affected by this disorder happen to be on the Sunday Times Rich List.
The Times Online has an article here titled “The more you have, the more you envy”.
I want to have affluenza!
